Description
The Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action (VDPA) marked a turning point in the promotion and protection of human rights and highlighted the rights and freedoms of all individuals, particularly those that were frequently marginalized, including women, children, persons with disabilities, members of minorities, and indigenous persons. Additionally, the VPDA drew connections between extreme poverty and inequality, which has become a central component in the human rights framework today. Part I, paragraph 14 states: "The existence of widespread extreme poverty inhibits the full and effective enjoyment of human rights; its immediate alleviation and eventual elimination must remain a high priority for the international community."
The Poverty and Inequality panel aims to address the processes, including austerity measures that promote increasing poverty and inequality in in both high and low income countries. Panelists will discuss the economic situations in the north and south as well as policy prescriptions at the UN and national levels.
