nelson-mandela  Nelson Mandela (July 18, 1918 - December 5, 2013)

CWGL pays tribute to a leader who has inspired generations in working toward justice, equality and freedom. It’s hard to imagine another person who has had such a profound impact on humanity.

A prisoner of conscience, leader of the anti-apartheid movement, South Africa's first democratically-elected president, Nobel Laureate, and human rights defender, he exemplified courage and strength of character. His commitment to the rights of women was unwavering, from South Africa ratifying the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) in 1995 under his presidency, to the adoption of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa in 1996, which created the Commission on Gender Equality, and pledged gender equality and the elimination of discrimination based on gender. His call for fundamental freedoms, dignity and human rights resonates with the work we do each and every single day toward a world where all people are equal and gender equality is systemically realized.

Along with Mandela’s family, South Africa, and the world, we mourn his passing and celebrate his life and legacy by committing to fulfill his vision of inclusion, respect, and true democracy.
