Vienna +10: Speak Out – Help Shape the Future of Women's Human Rights

...Before we had a movement that was claiming and demanding that women be involved in development projects. You had a shift in that perception, ...women started perceiving themselves as subjects of rights, as claimants of rights...It was not a passive wait for governments or for society to give us something. It became something that we were going to take because these are our human rights.
Roxanna Carrillo, UNIFEM

...We have the human rights standards set, and now the very important task with regard to this whole area of violence against women is to see how at the community level one can ensure that there is some realization of those rights...
Radhika Coomaraswamy, Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women (1994-2003)

Vienna Tribunal Video: Taking a Second Look

The testimonies of women from around the world in 1993 at the "Vienna Tribunal: Women's Rights are Human Rights" was a critical part of the successful strategy to get the world community to recognize violence against women as a violation of fundamental human rights and women's rights as human rights. We encourage you to watch these powerful testimonies as a way to begin a process of reflection on victories, challenges, and next steps for violence against women and women's human rights, ten years after Vienna.
