From November 25-December 10, 1992 women’s groups in every region of the world will participate in actions and events to protest violations of women’s human rights.  In over 100 countries, the Petition to the UN, calling upon the Preparatory Committee for 1993 World Conference on Human Rights to comprehensively address female human rights abuse, will be circulated and signatures gathered.  Many groups are producing posters, t-shirts, buttons and stickers to mark the campaign.  In addition to the specific dates listed above, we have received information about numerous events which will occur at unspecified dates throughout the 16 Days time period.  Women’s groups in Tanzania, France, Dominican Republic, Spain, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Zambia, Canada, and Switzerland are currently planning activities for the 16 Days.  The Chilean Commission on Human Rights will hold a meeting of its 13 regional commissions to address women’s rights as human rights.  Women’s groups in Bangladesh, Ecuador, Sri Lanka, Fiji and Malaysia have media strategies in place to insure that the press will run special articles and that national radio and television stations will air interviews and videos addressing violations of women’s human rights.  In the Netherlands, the Women and Autonomy Centre (VENA) with the Humanistic Committee on Human Rights (HOM) will publish a special issue of the VENA journal on violence against women.  In Costa Rica, the UN Latin American Institute for the Prevention of Crime will coordinate with a national network of groups to host daily events including theatre, dancing and concerts that will raise awareness of crimes against women.  In Korea, women’s groups will produce a play and a concert on gender violence for a public audience.  In Malaysia, the Joint Action Group Against Violence Against Women will hold a Candlelight Vigil for victims of gender violence.  Women in Law and Development of Africa, Zimbabwe will host an open day and drama presentation focusing on the problem of violence against women in Harare.  The Asia Pacific Women, Law and Development Network is coordinating events with many groups in that region to foster public awareness of violence against women as a development and human rights issue.
